Introduction

The word 'Sikh' is a word form the Punjabi language and means 'disciple'. It denotes that Sikhs are the disciples of God and follow the writings and teachings of the Ten Sikh Gurus and these teachings are enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.  The teachings of Sikhism are practical and universal in their appeal to all mankind.

Definition of a Sikh

  • "Any human being who faithfully believes in:
  • (i) One Immortal Being
  • (ii) Ten Gurus, from Guru Nanak to Guru Gobind Singh
  • (iii) The Guru Granth Sahib
  • (iv) The utterances and teachings of the ten Gurus and
  • (v) the baptism bequeathed by the tenth Guru, and who does not owe allegiance to any other religion is a Sikh." (Rehat Maryada, Sikh Code of Conduct)

Philosophy and Beliefs

  • There is one and only One God.
  • The goal of the mortal human being is to merge its soul at the end of its human existence with the immortal God. The soul goes through cycles of births and deaths before it reaches the human form.
  • Sikhs should believe in one and only one God and practice living a virtuous and truthful life while maintaining a balance between their spiritual obligations and temporal obligations.
  • Sikhism condemns blind rituals and superstitions such as fasting, visiting places of pilgrimage, worship of the dead and idol worship.
  • Sikhism does not require renunciation of the world or celibacy to achieve salvation. Instead, it preaches living the life of a householder, earning an honest living and avoiding worldly temptations and sins for achieving salvation and merging with God.
  • Sikhism recognizes all human race as one. It also teaches the full equality for men and women.

Basics of Sikhi

History of Sikhi

Sikh religion was established in 1469 by Guru Nanak dev ji and was followed by 11 Gurus which are as follows.

1. Guru Nanak Dev ji

2. Guru Angad Dev Ji

3. Guru Amardas Ji

4. Guru Ramdas Ji

5. Guru Arjan Dev Ji

6. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji

7. Guru Har Rai Ji

8. Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji

9. Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji

10. Guru Gobind Singh Ji

11. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

When Guru Gobind Singh Ji went to Sachkhand they ordered Sikhs that there will be no living Guru for Sikhs now and gave Gurugadhi to Guru Granth Sahib Ji who is 11th Guru of Sikhs.

Guru Granth Sahib Ji has all of the teaching which has been taught by 10 Gurus for a better tomorrow. Sikhs were ordered to follow teaching from Guru Granth  Sahib ji and start their day with a Hukumnama.

Hukumana is a daily order/ advise from Guru sahib to follow throughout the day for a better life.

Guru Gobind Singh ji created Khalsa in 1699 with 5 Piare. They were Bhai Daya Singh ji, Bhai Sahib Singh Ji, Bhai Himmat Singh Ji, Bhai Mohkam Singh Ji, Bhai Dharam Singh Ji. Khalsa was brought to light to protect poor and to help the one who is in need. To become Khalsa you need to be in Rehat and needs to stay away from 4 Kurehat (Ku means Opposite or negation and rehat means code of conduct).

It is said that when Guru Gobind Singh first initialed the five Sikhs (Khalsa) in 1699 he mentioned the four Kurehta (the four prohibitions) to them after they had taken Amrit (baptism ceremony with water) at Vaisakhi 1699.

The Guru Sahib asked the five Panj Piare (beloved of the Guru) to refrain from the four Kurehtas; namely,

  • 1. Cutting or trimming of hair or Kesh,
  • 2. Fornication or adultery,
  • 3. Halal meat or flesh of animal slaughtered in a slow and painful manner, (some say all meat is banned - the Guru is believed to have used the word - "Kuthha")
  • 4. Use of tobacco and intoxication drug.
